Weekly Update

We hope you all continue to endure the “over-the-top” summer weather and COVID-19 restrictions. Everything is scrambling our minds, but as long as you are all safe and healthy, we can do this.
We do have several items of importance to report.
We continue to collect monies/product for school supplies; the Veterans have chipped in, a number of SIGC members have made donations and Michele is shopping at Staples getting the most bang for our bucks. Please, if you want to contribute to the school supplies plea, donate via Paypal through out website: www.StatenIslandGivingCircle.org
The second portion of our Summer Literacy Program is winding down as we get closer to the “regular” school year start. Jeanne Raleigh reports that The Spoken Word Theater Group (her group’s chosen name) is going very well. She is working with Projectivity Group’s poetry teacher. There are 18 students, K-3. Music is being incorporated and the focus is on phonemic awareness skills through speaking and listening activities.
The response/interest for both our Summer Reading Programs has been extremely positive and strong. Therefore, we are hoping to carry these programs forward throughout the entire school year. IN ADDITION, we hope to add a STEM program, under the tutelage of MaryBeth McCarthy to this extra zoom learning. Literacy Inc. and MaryBeth McCarthy will be brainstorming with us these next few weeks so we can have comprehensive plans in place. If you are interested in signing on as mentors/educators again (or for the first time) with these beautiful kids, just let us know.
We received 3,000 new pairs of socks last week from Bombas. This company is absolutely unbelievable. It’s not even necessary to try to explain how invaluable these donated socks are to the underserved kids we love and serve.

Although we cannot go to Project Hospitality’s children’s homeless shelter during these surreal times, we are sending over cartons of new clothing and Angelina, our contact lady there, will distribute.
