August 11’s Tuesday with Evelyn and Michele
We have just a few tidbits to share with you today, but we’re happy to say you are responding well to these little Tuesday updates. Please pay particular attention to the CONTEST Poster below….everyone loves a contest and who doesn’t want to win $250?!?!?! Our Executive Committee met via Zoom last week to hash out a couple new ideas, one of which is posted here. It’s our “Do You Have a $250 Idea?” Check it out. You can apply by sending us an email detailing your idea. E-mail: sigivingcircle@aol.com. Our thanks go out to Zion Lutheran Church who dropped off a second load of collected unperishable food last night. Their congregation has very generously embraced the Staten Island Giving Circle and will continue to collect food for the underserved for us to distribute. Carol Larsen Vokral and her son, Eric, delivered it to us last night. Our first delivery a couple of weeks ago was given to Julius Walker to distribute to his probation kids’ and their families. It was so appreciated. Last night’s delivery will be divided between Oakwood Church’s pop-up distribution and Grupo Manhattan’s (Staten Island rehab facility) clients. In rapid response to S.O.S. requests we received a couple of weeks ago, Northfield Bank has awarded us $1,500.00 to cover these two concerns. Mona Ghanem orchestrated this request for us and we thank her for being such a great ambassador to us through Northfield Bank. The monies will be used judiciously to purchase and deliver compact sleeping bags, rain ponchos, flannel shirts, and blankets to the homeless who Bob Sweeney covers for us down by the ferry. And Joe Meizlik explained that the homebound veterans have become more and more isolated with the COVID crisis and some of these monies will be handled by Joe for food and winter necessities (blankets, hygiene products, socks, underwear, etc.). Angelina from Project Hospitality’s children’s homeless shelter picked up two big cartons of new clothes for the kids there. We are looking for used laptop computers to give to Julius’ kids (Probation). Pat Schwimer donated one and it is already in the hands of one young lady who landed a job with the Census Bureau. The Bureau gave her a phone to operate from, but the computer is so much easier and more efficient. This young woman also is hoping to get back to high school so she can move forward. We will be holding our monthly Giving Circle meeting VIA ZOOM at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening, August 19. Please plan to join us as there will be lots to talk about. |
